Two quick things and then we will let you get back to your Holiday weekend.

Memorial Day workout. We had originally scheduled this for 5 am, but after looking at the club schedule, we are going to start it at 6 instead. This gives everyone a bit more sleep. We will swim 6-8 and then walk over for breakfast at the Buff.

Secondly, entries for the FAST meet are due by May 31st. There are cut times for this meet, but we will fudge you into events that you are close on. Please check the meet info for the cuts and get those entries to me by Thursday. Please note this is a prelim/final meet and the expectation is that is you make it back, you will swim
finals.

Lots of fun stuff this week, but let's start with a big congrats to the High School boys for a great state meet this weekend. Of special note, congrats to Cody Hoyes on making his first Sectional cut in the 100 Free!

The Nike online order is available through the 4th of June. See me for a copy or follow the link on the website (in my last newsletter). The organization code is RALLYAQUASWIM. This order will likely not be extended so don't wait.

Workout changes.
There will only be morning workout, 5-6:30 am, on Memorial Day. All evening practices have the night off. Enjoy the day. If attending in the morning be prepared to have to ride or walk out as most of the roads are closed.

The long course workouts at 9 am Tuesday and Thursdays for the year round swimmers begin at Scott Carpenter on June 5th. Please contact Grant regarding workout types.

The morning workouts for the seasonal swimmers begin on June 4th. Please contact Jackie for more info.

We are having a party to kick off the FRSL season on June 1st at 5:30-7:30PM on the pool deck at Rally. All RACE swimmers are welcome. We will have food from Radda, so please RSVP to Jackie (jdayton@rallysportboulder.com) so we know how much to get.

Finally, we published a deadline for suit orders at High Point. Please note that this was only to have the suit for the first meet. Team suits can be order at any time, all year round.

We have two ways to get great RallySport Aquatics gear.

As always, for suits, bags, sweats and the essentials, head down to High Point Swim and Sport in Boulder. They have a gear list for us and we get a discount on team gear and some race suits. Just tell them you are with RallySport Aquatics. It is the same gear for the seasonal and the year round swimmers.

We also have an online order for Nike gear. Follow these directions to get to the gear.
STEP 1: Go to lidsteamsports.com on or after 5/14/12.
STEP 2: Click on the TEAM SHOP box, type in the 'organization code' (listed on top of the Instruction Sheet) in the "I Have a Form' box, and click 'Submit Code".
STEP 3: Select team merchandise and add to shopping cart.
STEP 4: Once shopping is complete, checkout and either register as a new customer, or log in with previously registered information.

This order ends on the 4th of June so get on it now. There are great options on there like sweatshirts, workout tees and hats.

Congrats on a great meet at Foothills this weekend and to the High School boys on impressive swims at League and Conference. Its a big weekend for those guys this weekend with the State 4A and 5A championships. Good luck boys.

Not a lot in this newsletter.

A quick reminder that meet entries for the June 1-3 Star/Cuda meet are due to Grant (gholicky@yahoo.com) and/or Taylor today or tomorrow. This is a long course meet, but it is open to everyone and being that it is only over in Thornton, it is a great first meet. If you would like to wait for the short course meets, they are right around the corner.

Also, we wanted to give a congrats to Grace Valette for setting the team record in the 9-10 Girls Long Course 100 back at the FST Spring Open. Way to go Grace!

We start May with some sad but exciting news frm Rob Putnam.

Dear RallySport Swimmers, Parents and Friends;

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I am leaving my position as Head Age Group coach at RallySport and I will be starting a new position as Head Coach of the Manhattan Marlins (KS) on May 21, 2012.

I have enjoyed my tenure and appreciate having had the opportunity to work with all of you. My experience at RallySport has been one that I will always remember fondly. Thank you for the support, guidance, and encouragement you have provided me during my time at RallySport. Even though I will miss all of you very much, I am looking forward to this new challenge and to starting a new phase in my coaching career.

Please keep in touch (rtpracer@hotmail.com) and I look forward to running into you at future swim meets somewhere down the road.

Thanks again for everything.

Yours truly,

Rob Putnam

I know that when Rob came to RallySport 10 years ago, I fully expected him to move onto another Head Coaching job. We have been so very fortunate to have him for this long and in the meantime, we have created a program and philosophy that works very well for this team. That philosophy is the centerpiece as RACE moves forward. Rob will be with us through the May 12th meet and in the meantime we will be conducting a national search for a new Head Age Group Coach. Until the new coach is hired, Taylor Nelson will be serving as our interim coach. He will be on deck with Rob and myself over the next few weeks as we transition and will join us at meets. We are excited to have Taylor take a more active part in our program.

I know this is sudden and big news to many, but please know that RACE's continuity and success is our number one goal and we will put a great deal of effort and passion into finding the best replacement for Rob. Please do not hesitate to contact myself, Jackie or Rob with any and all questions.

Happy Tax Day!

A big congrats to the Junior team swimmers that hit up the Castle Rock 12 and Under meet. Colin reported great swims and great fun.

I am including a statistical analysis from USA Swimming in this week's newsletter. It is a study on Age Group Top 16 in the nation swimmers and observing how many are still Top 16 swimmers at 17-18.

The 10 & Under Wonder?

Several years ago, USA Swimming looked at 10 & Unders who were ranked in the Top 16 and followed the likelihood that they would still be ranked once they were in high school.  This is what we found:

Ranked Top 16 as a:

10 & Under               Still Ranked as 17-18                   11%

11-12                        Still Ranked as 17-18                   21%

13-14                        Still Ranked as 17-18                   36%

15-16                        Still Ranked as 17-18                   48%

Moral of the Story:  A 10 & Under can survive and thrive...but 50% of the top swimmers develop AFTER Junior Year in High School. If you have an age-group athlete, make sure you emphasize fun, and participation in a variety of sports and activities, including unstructured play and skill development and that there is a long-term progression plan. Discourage early specialization in one sport or one event.

Much of our program at RACE is based on this study. We have long focused on technique in our youngest swimmers in order to form the foundation for when they are older. One of the most interesting things in this for me is the small number of 15-16 Top 16 Swimmers that remain so even a few years later. LESS THAN HALF. Our goal as a program should be to produce swimmers that are ready to speed up in college with the requisite skill set to do so.

For you swimmers, this analysis is very exciting. What it means is that less than half of the nation's fastest swimmers at 18 were the fastest at 16. The best is yet to come!!!

Remember that we signed you up for the May 5th meet at VMAC. Check with your coach to confirm. Also, remember entries for the May 12th meet at Foothills are due Monday.

See you at the meet this weekend.

Due to an overwhelming number of entries for the FST April LC Open meet that all came in when the meet opened for entries, we will be modifying the Saturday sessions to include a third session. Friday and Sunday sessions will not be affected.  This move is necessitated by the requirement that we keep the 12 and under sessions to less than four hours.  Our original time-line for the two sessions ran over 5 hours for the 12 and under and over six hours for the 13-14 and Open swimmers.

Details are as follows:

Session 2:           10 and under                             Saturday
Warm-up to begin @ 6:30 AM,  First Splash @ 7:30  AM (Please note that the start time is 30 minutes earlier than previously announced)

Session 3:        11-12 and 13-14 BOYS ONLY        Saturday
Warm-up to begin @ Approx. 10:30 AM, First Splash @ 11:30  AM

Session 4:        13-14 GIRLS ONLY and Open        Saturday
Warm-up to begin @ Approx. 2:35 PM, First Splash @ 3:30  PM

Important notes:

1) Please send in as soon as possible ALL KNOWN SCRATCHES - we're trying to shorten the time line with advance knowledge of scratches

2) NO additional swimmers please, Barb will be looking for these and will reject them.

3) We will need 15 additional timers, please ask your parents to volunteer, fortunately the individual session times are reduced.

4) Event 25/26 in the time-line, attached, indicates 12 and under 200 Free, the morning session 200 free is 10 and under only.  Event 25A/25B held in the mid-day session will be for the 11 and 12 swimmers

5) For any 13/14 Boys entered in the 1500 Free, this event will be held at the end of the Session 4 in the evening,  Any 13/14 boys entered in the 1500 wishing to change from the 13/14 events to "Open" events in Session 4 will be re-seeded into those events.  Please send that information to Barb and she will move them into the Open events.

6) All events greater than 200 yards will be positive check-in.

7) Since the time-line for Session 4 runs to 8;55 PM, and considering that late hour, I would like to swim the 1500's at  2 to a lane.  I would like all coaches with swimmers in those events to respond to Barb and me with their approval for this adjustment.

We will be using fly-over starts during the meet for events of 100 meters or greater. Please discuss this with your swimmers and ask them to remain in the water until the subsequent heat begins.

There will be a coaches meeting 20 minutes prior to the start of Friday's session as noted in the meet information to address any questions.

We are making these adjustments in an effort to afford all your swimmers the opportunity to compete. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me, or call me on the number listed below.

Mahalo,

Jeffrey D. Bushey

It is great to be back in the swing of things here at RACE. Long Course here we come!

Important upcoming dates.

I am waiting to hear if we got in the May 5th Cuda meet. Stay tuned, because if we did, I will need entries very quickly.

Entries for the Foothills May 12th (Saturday only) meet will be due to Grant/Rob by Monday the 23rd of April. That is the day after the first Foothills meet.

Entries for the Star/Cuda meet June 1-3 are due to Grant on Monday the 7th of May.

A reminder to all those planning on the Omaha meet. Entries need to be to Grant by April 16th.

There is no margin for error on any of these meets. Please send questions to Grant or Rob so we can get ahead of it all.

We are in the Foothills meet on the 20-22nd. Be advised that all swimmers were entered at actual Long Course times; no converted times were used. If we had no recorded time in our computer, swimmers were entered at No Time. We did this so that we can start the season with a clean slate. We don't believe that conversions are that reliable and it is far better to compare apples to apples so to speak.

Finally, remember that our seasonal summer league team is just getting started. We have 4 duel meets, an invitational, and a championship meet on the schedule for our new league and all swimmers are eligible. This league is not subject to the BVSSL rules on when training is allowed. It is perfect for those swimmers who love to swim and want to still race in a summer league. We are very excited about it. Tell your friends.

Welcome back from break. RallySport Aquatics resumed normal workouts tonight, and we are on track for a great Spring and Summer. Please check these newsletters and the website often for meet entry deadlines and schedule updates.

VERY IMPORTANT
Please be advised that all entries for the Foothills April Long Course Open are due tomorrow at the absolute latest. No exceptions. For the outdoor groups, the same entry rules apply: if we do not hear from you we will enter you and pick your events. For the indoor groups, we will only enter you if we hear from you. Email all entries for this meet to gholicky@yahoo.com.

BIG NEWS
RallySport Manta Rays summer league team has become part of RACE! Now we have the best of both worlds. RallySport Aquatics has helped create a new summer league affiliated with USA Swimming. Now you can participate in summer league duel meets and a league championship meet AND be part of a year round team. There is no date to stop training or start training. If you know a swimmer who loves swimming, they can do it all.

We will be joining the Front Range Summer Swim League, along with Colorado Athletic Club, the YMCA on 95th, and Flatirons. We will have 4 duel meets this summer...
June 9th at YMCA
June 16th at Rally vs Flatirons
June 23rd @ Colorado Athletic Club
July 14th @ Flatirons

There will be a league invite open to all area teams at the Y on June 30th, and our inaugural FRSL Championships meet will be on the 27th and 28th of July. The great news is all levels of swimmers can participate in all the meets.

So spread the news to people in the swimming community. We truly feel this helps fill a niche in the sport in Boulder County. The best way for us to grow is through our existing members. For any and all questions, email me at gholicky@yahoo.com
